Bats

Bats

Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight using exceptionally elongated fingers and a membrane stretched between them to create wings. One out of five of all mammals living on Earth today are bats. Bats are found on every continent except Antarctica and normally take shelter in caves, under rock crevices, and in buildings. There are fruit eating bats, nectar eating bats, fish eating bats, vampire bats in South America, and carnivorous bats that eats everything from small mammals to frogs. But most bats eat insects at night using echolocation to find them with. Echolocation is a sophisticated use of hearing use by some species to navigate and locate prey. Bats emit high pitch sounds that bounce off their prey and send faint echoes back to the bats ears. From these echoes the bat can determine the distance, size, speed, and direction of their prey. By using echolocation some bats can find their prey in complete darkness.
